Vinny's Virtuous Garden: Natural gardening tips for May / June

Lawns

  • Complete lawn repairs before air / soil temperature  reaches 80 degrees
  • Raise mower blades to 4+ inches for 6 to 8 weeks to shade out crab grass and develop deep root systems
  • Keep grass clippings on lawn to stimulate bacterial activity which fertilizes the lawn and reduces disease
  • Water regularly: supplement natural rain for a total of 2" per week

Trees

  • Prune spring flowering trees for aesthetics immediately after blooms finish to preserve next year’s flower buds.  Do not prune before flowering in order to discourage vegetative growth.
  • Apply organic soil amendments per recommendations of soil tests done in March / April - Apply after blooms are finished.
  • Finish transplanting trees before air / soil temperature reaches 80 degrees.

Shrubs

  • Remove faded flowers to encourage more blooms next year.

Perennials

  • Apply organic soil amendments per recommendations of soil Tests done in March / April
  • Set seedlings outdoors to harden off
  • Plant container perennials after danger of frost
  • Thin out overgrown perennials. Divide and transplant before soil / air temperature reaches 80 degrees. * Move Fall blooming perennials in spring / Move spring blooming perennials in fall.

Bulbs

  • Prepare beds for summer flowering bulbs
  • Remove faded flowers / yellow foliage

Hardscape / Other

  • Repair fences / edgings / walls as needed
  • Resurface paths as needed
  • Apply waterproofing  / stain to wood structures as needed
