The Mill River Park & Greenway Master Plan lays out the long-term vision for Mill River Park. Presented to the public by landscape architects Olin Partnership on October 24th 2006, the plan was published in final form in July, 2007. It can be viewed at the following links:
The Master Plan calls for the creation of a 28-acre park on both sides of Mill River from Broad Street to Pulaski Street that will serve as an oasis in city life for Stamford residents and area employees. The central element of the plan is the restoration of Mill River including the removal of the Mill Pond dam and walls and the reconstruction of a natural river channel bordered by banks vegetated by native trees and plants. On either side f this natural core are a series of urban park spaces and esplanades containing active and passive recreation facilities including a playground, carousel, great lawn, skating rink and fountain, kayak launch, fishing piers, café, sculpture garden and a new cherry tree esplanade.
The Master Plan also provides for creation of continuous paths along the river that will serve as part of a larger Mill River Greenway. The Master Plan will be implemented in stages. The next major step is the river restoration, then the build out of areas of the park that the City currently owns.
Mill River Collaborative will conduct a capital campaign to raise private funding to complement the City’s investment in the park. Completing the build-out of Mill River Park will require the support of many entities, organizations and individuals as contributors and volunteers.
