Mill River is Restored; Park Construction in 2011

The army Corps of Engineers’ restoration of Mill River is nearing completion. Construction work is complete and planting will be finished in June. Planting is taking place at four sites. At the Mill Pond site, 77 native trees and over 200 shrubs are being planted along the river edges with seed mixes of wetland and upland native perennials. Trees, shrubs and seed mixes are also going in along the river path behind Wright Tech, just south of Scalzi Park. Near Pulaski Street and Richmond Hill Avenue, salt marshes restored last spring will receive additional plants and maintenance.

After the planting is completed in June, the Mill River Park site will remain closed to give the new plants an opportunity to become established. We look forward to bidding out Phase 1 of the park construction, between Main and Broad Streets later this year so construction of park elements can begin next spring, including, paths, promenades, lighting, walls, utilities and benches. At the end of Phase 1, in 2012, hundreds of new trees and shrubs will be installed, including the new cherry tree promenade.
