One of the ways to revitalize a downtown shopping district is to create an aesthetically pleasing environment. Accordingly, The Bayonne Town Center, together with the Community Development office, has created a façade program for our members and prospective tenants to accomplish that very goal.

With the help of architect Walter Chatham, we have created design guidelines for the construction or makeover of a storefront. Since re-doing the front of a store can be costly, the façade program assists property and store owners with part of the expense through a grant that matches 50% of the cost with a maximum of up to $10,000.00, while corner stores can receive a maximum of $15,000.00.

The Bayonne Town Center Guidelines will need to be followed whether the request for a grant is made or not.

Several of the stores on Broadway have already participated in the program, including: Marty’s Shoes, Mandees, Foot Locker, Joyce Leslie, Sasson’s Youthworld, Sai Scentsations, and Hispanic American Travel Agency. There are several steps to participating in the program:

:: You will need to contact Ruby Snead in the Community Development office at (201) 858-6120 to get the necessary paperwork for the grant.
:: Once you have your architectural rendering, a copy of it needs to be submitted to the Bayonne Town Center for review and to be signed off on by Walter Chatham, Town Center architect.
:: The Bayonne Town Center will then forward a letter to Community Development—Ruby Snead, and Zoning Officer, Donna Rossi, to let them know that the guidelines have been followed.

If you are re-doing your sign or storefront and are not participating within the Bayonne Town Center façade program, you will still need to follow the design guidelines. You will not be able to receive your permit from the Building Department without the plans being signed off on by the Bayonne Town Center architect, Walter Chatham.

The Bayonne Town Center works with all contractors and architects. The architects and contractors who have been involved with the façade program are:
